I am back with you after a short hiatus. Just got caught up with family matters, including the latest addition to our family - our five-month-old pup we rescued off the streets of Pune. In four months she is bigger than my three-year-old daughter! Amazing, isn't it?
I wasn't much of a dog lover even a few months back, but I couldn't bear to see the mum struggling with this huge wound around her private part, while feeding her litter... Later we learnt from the vet that the mum's a teenager and has been raped to pregnancy!!
Such instances are not limited to stray animals on the streets of India. They touch us even in our very bedroom. Rape is not just limited to preying men in the dark corners of deserted buildings, but in our very bedrooms! How many of us report of marital rape? And how many of us face it on a daily basis?
I am not a feminist but I do believe in women's rights and only yesterday I heard of a friend who's been facing it for nine years now. She has a seven-year-old and now her so-called husband is planning his second marriage...
But my friend is a liberated woman of today and all that she had to do is report it to the authorities. In fact, now there's an online forum to voice your grievance - www.fight-back.net, a website started by Mumbai-based Zubin Driver. This is actually a fight for stronger rape laws including life imprisonment for offenders, and "death penalty in case of minor rapes".
They already have a wide following on Facebook. Legal expert Soli Sorabjee, and celebrities Ranvijay and Smriti Irani are a few of the names who actively supporting the cause.
PS: Guys, do you want to join hands too?
